Intro

Somerset West is a beautiful town  in the Helderberg area, surrounded by mountains and vineyards, with scenic views of the ocean towards False Bay. The area has a Mediterranean climate with winder rainfall.  There are beautiful residential gardens which squirrels and guinea fowl frequently visit.

History

In 1672 Dutch soldiers established a cattle post here, then in 1822 Somerset West was founded along the Tweede Rivier which later became known as the Lourens River, on part of the historic farm Vergelegen. The town borders Strand, and was named after Lord Charles Henry Somerset. It is encircled by the Helderberg Mountain, which is part of the Hottentots-Holland mountain range.

In the 1960s AECI built the 2nd largest dynamite factory in the world, on land which has now been named Paardevlei.
